Is Your Area Rug Worth A Professional Cleaning

Area rugs are more than just a temporary way to cover your bare floors in your home. They serve a purpose. Area rugs protect beautiful hardwood floors and extend their life. Rugs add decoration and warmth to your home. They also catch so much dirt in high traffic areas. All of this adds up to a dirty piece of upholstery that will definitely need cleaning. This week we will help you determine if your area rug is worth a professional cleaning.

Whether it is a family heirloom, a great piece you found at an estate sale, or just a bargain buy you found at the home store. Understanding if your rug is worth the cost of a professional cleaning is important, not just to your wallet, but to your rug. Rugs come in all different types of fabric. So you need to know what type of solution to use. Some rugs may be cheaper to replace than clean. Lastly you need to know what a proper cleaning looks like and how much it should approximately cost.

What To Expect From A Professional Cleaning

To start off, there are many businesses that are trying to earn your hard earned dollar. You’re going to find businesses out there offering you great deals to clean your rug. It is important to know what is included in that cost, and what is their process. Some companies will try to cut corners, and tell you they can clean your rug right there in their truck. Well I hate to burst your bubble but that is not going to happen.

A proper cleaning is a long process that can only take place in a facility with proper equipment. Most of which does not fit in a van or trailer.

A professional cleaning business will most likely pick up your area rug, and take it back to its facility. They will determine the best method once they determine the type of rug. They will then beat all of the dirt, sand and allergens out of the rug. Once they beat out the dirt, they then will begin the process of adding the right solution to the rug and proceed with the washing. Once the cleaning is finished they will need to hang the rug for drying, all before returning to you. Phew, sounds like a long process, huh? That’s because it is. We’re sorry to tell you but you’re usually not going to get all of that for $99.

Rug Cost vs Cleaning Cost

The cost to have a rug cleaned is on average around $2.50 to $6.00 per square foot of the rug. The cost is really determined on the type of rug that you are wanting to have washed. If the rug is synthetic, then you can expect to pay on the lower end. Cotton and wool rugs will normally start around $3.50/sqft range and go up.

Where you start to see an increase is with your silk and persian rugs. These are very delicate and require extreme care when it comes to having them cleaned.

Make sure that when you call or have a professional come over to inspect your rug they know there is a difference. It could determine whether you are returned a quality product or rug worse looking then when you sent it away. Once you understand the cost involved to have your rug professionally cleaned you can determine whether it’s worth it or more fiscal to just buy a new rug. You’re not going to want to pay $400 for a $250 rug unless that rug has some type of sentimental value. So make sure you keep businesses honest and that you do your homework before making that expense.

Is It Worth It?

At the end of the day, you are going to have to be the one to decide is your area rug worth a professional cleaning. What we wouldn’t recommend though is letting time go by without either cleaning or replacing them. If you do so it could end up costing you more then cleaning or replacing your rug. Rugs are pivotal when it comes to the wear and tear of your house, so make sure to take proper care. As always if you have questions or need a consultation to help you make that decision.
